The Go-Giver Tour: Chillaxing at the Terminal! Journal 5

These are notes I’ve gone over for this particular video:
Dr. Tom Barret:

• People “thin slice” you (like in the book “Blink”) which means they can analyze you within a few minutes and won’t want to do business w/ you if they don’t like what they see.

• Because of this you have to think about these three things that they/we are looking for: 1) Do you care about me? 2) Do I trust you? and 3) Do you have anything to say?

• Ultimately Tom believe you should have a strong focus on your company’s vision so that you can instill it into your team who will because of this vision work and believe in what they do. This will come across to your customers as a QUALITY company.

(that’s all I’ve deciphered from my notes so far! Check back for more later!)

Essentially:
Amazing week, incredibly humble, tired, and excited. I’ve got a whole bunch of notes to go over. I’m considering taking the rest of this week off to get my life figured out from this point and to determine how to apply what I’ve learned most effectively so I can start fresh and all-out on Monday. We’ll see how I feel on Wednesday after I’ve had a break from doing anything.

Hope you’re all well!

GGT Journal 4: Extreme Business Makeover

Had a really fantastic day, it was the first day of the Extreme Business Makeover; we’re settled in at our two story house and had some time to chill in the hot tub today to wind down a bit. What we’ve been trying to do today that has been different from the other days is making sure that we talked about what we learned today, which is going to help me to summarize the notes I took for today :)

Hope everyone is doing great!

GGT Journal 3: April 22, 2009; St. Louis and Nashville

Hey everyone, hope those of you who were at gogivertour.com enjoyed the stream, I’m sitting in a dark Ford Flex right now as we make our way towards our hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. Unfortunately because of this my camera can’t get enough light for a decent recording so I’m waiting on posting my vlog until we stop somewhere long enough to get this recorded. However these Verizon wireless USB modems work great now, So I do have access to the internet as we drive. But as I said, I’ll update this when we stop with some notes from the day, people I met, and a Vlog (which by the way is a video blog or log) of the day!

It was great to meet everyone today and I hope you all have had a great one thus far!

GGTJournal 1, April 20/21, 2009: Night Before My Journey Starts

Thanks to all of my sponsors and to everyone on the tour for setting it up and giving me this opportunity :D You’re all awesome!

I’ll See You on the Tour

I am so incredibly excited! I made it into the Go-Giver tour along with four other entrepreneurs! I will be leaving on Tuesday for Chicago, Illinois to meet up with Ivan Avalos, Emanuel Avalos, Justin Burns, David Hageman, Gilbert Melott, Gabe Strom, Brian Tomkins and Bradley Will. If you come out to one of the various “TweetUps” you can come and meet us, if you want to meet me, look for one of the younger guys with the yo-yo! Haha! At any rate, I recorded a video explaining my plans once the tour starts and wanted to show it to you!

Now as far as sponsors go to date, I’m not sure if they want me telling how much they gave, so I’ll simply tell you who has donated and what I plan to do with this information. Dana Doering from Dean Doering and Associates (one of their many aliases), Dana helped me get together enough funds up front to pay for my plane tickets before the week deadline was crossed, without her this travel expense would have been incredibly high; Barbara Huguenin from Coach America, she is a shining star of solid proof that social media works and that there are people out there who care about the youth in our community; Gerry Sarich, You are just amazing! I can’t wait to get to know you more and possibly send some business your Daughter’s way once my book is ready to be published! There are some others and could even be more, I’ll know by tomorrow.

The whole point in me telling you the sponsors and that I have a plan for them is this: I own Double-Take Industries, a clothing company which makes custom shirts, so it’s only a good fit for me to take all my sponsors, put their logos together, and print the onto five shirts to wear throughout the tour! And that’s what I’m going to do! I’m going to give back in one of the best ways I know how to. This tour is built around social media, and will get quite a bit of exposure, so I want to give back to those who gave to me by promoting them to the world!

All in all, I wouldn’t be able to go on this tour if it wasn’t for the hard work and dedication of Julie Larson, my coach and mentor. She’s one of my biggest fans and promoters and if she weren’t here I wouldn’t have thought to enter the tour. So thanks Julie!

Business Coaching #1

Hey Everyone,

Today I started my Business Coaching sessions with Julie Larson (my business coach) again and I’ve gotta tell you, it made me feel a little out of shape business-wise. So I’m kind of excited, because I know for a fact that I’m going to see progress. I have my coaching sessions every Friday before EYEclub meets and will until… well I’m not sure when I’ll stop or if I will. At any rate today’s session was just a refresher for me. To catch me up with some of Julie’s teaching methods and to give me three goals to strive to achieve by next Friday.

The goals I have at this point are to: 1) Set up a poster to use for promoting the Emmett Yo-Yo Club, 2) Buy yo-yo inventory for reselling at the club, and 3) Finish three designs for publishing on YoYoShirts.Com next friday.

Right now I have half of the art ready for the yo-yo club posters and I have yo-yos soon to be lined up for selling at the shop from my buddy Dave Bazan who use to own a shop in Texas. As far as Yo-Yo shirt designs go, I’ve got a list of eight designs to pick from at the moment, and will be choosing the three best (though in my opinion these are all good) to work on drawing and digitalizing for this next week for YoYoShirts.Com.

Other than than I’m taking it easy right now; I have a class scheduled tomorrow to help a local business owner set up her social networking profiles from 10:00am until around 1:00pm but I told her it’s up to her whether or not she wanted to work that long on it.

Hope everyone is having a pleasant day!

The Go-Giver Tour

I spent today trying not to feel sick so I could record my little about me video for “The Go-Giver Tour” (http://www.gogivertour.com/). It’s an awesome idea that was started between four entrepreneurs back east to travel down to an event organized the the author of a book called “The Go-Giver” which I just ordered. From what I hear it’s a really amazing and life changing book, as far as philosophy in association with business goes. Can’t wait to get it! At any rate the whole point in even posting this so late in the day was that I wanted to share this video that I made today with you!

Hope you enjoyed it! It’s really neat hearing what I sound like to someone else… Never really recorded myself in length before. Have a great evening (or morning, since most of you who see this will see it in the morning). Take care!

Mike

PS. If you know what one could to to make 300 dollars soon let me know… I’d like to goto this thing if I get picked and I’ve pretty much sold all the yo-yos I can to raise money for my shop and don’t have anything else to sell to raise money for this! Opps!

Another Project, Another Day

Well it’s been a short while since my last post and I felt like letting people know I’ve turned the “Learn to Throw” yo-yo class into the DTI sponsored “Emmett Yo-Yo Club”. I’m currently finalizing the logo that will be used for branding the club (like t-shirts, hats, custom yo-yos, letterhead, etc). I’m going to be acquiring some yo-yos before next Saturday and will be starting the club on that day. I plan to have posters ready by Sunday night and will be distributing them on Monday around town and to schools.

Other than working on the club I’ve finally finished illustrating the trick section of my book, “Learn to Throw: A Beginner’s Course in Yo-Yoing” and just need to enhance a few essays with outside sources and need maybe 10 drawings and 10 pictures to illustrate some how-to guides and some historical information. Otherwise the book is done and I need to seek funding for publishing it at a Print on Demand (POD) website, or I need to find a publisher to carry the book for me. Not sure which route to take just yet, it has been advised to me to attempt to get scholastic to carry the book, since they have an in with most schools and can produce huge amounts of these books. I guess we’ll see where this goes when the book is done.

Not too much else to report, feeling like I’m starting to get a cold, which sucks because it’s finally getting warm out. Oh well, more reasons to stay inside and work! Haha!

Have a nice evening everyone!

Mike

Gaining Ground

I spent half of this last day hanging out with a friend of mine I rarely see anymore; before and after that, I was working on yoyoshirts.com. I’ve been slowly pulling it together one corner at a time. I feel I’ve finished getting together a basic design I can work with for the website. I’ve implemented Google’s Analytics program that will be used to mark progress and develop goals for the website. I plan to start using Uservoices’s feedback system to allow my userbase-to-be to tell me what they’d like to see.

Future goals for the website include adding in a web forum, a competition system for user submitted shirts, and using the website as a store that other companies can use to distribute their goods. We’ll see where it goes from there.

At this point I’m finishing up a few designs which will be produced under YoYoShirts.Com to help develop ‘brand recognition’ for the website, and after that if shirts containing the yoyoshirts logo are produced it will be on a seasonal/holiday ’special edition’ basis. If not that it will be the competition user submitted shirts or for general company promotion. Any other yo-yo related clothing designs I come up with will be done under the umbrella of Double-Take Industries and the YoYoShirts.Com website will from that point on focus on only providing acquired products and the competition designed products.

Thanks for listening to me ramble, If you have any input please comment it to me as it would be greatly appreciated! Have a pleasant day!

Mike
